An extended spell of hot, dry weather across parts of Europe has led to lower than usual water levels on key rivers such as the Danube and the Rhine, creating disruptions for river cruises at present.

Why Low Water Levels Matter for River Cruises

River ships are designed with shallow drafts so they can navigate through locks and under low bridges. However, when water levels drop below a certain point, ships may no longer be able to sail safely on some stretches. These conditions tend to vary by region and can change quite quickly as weather patterns shift.

How cruise lines are responding

When water levels fall, river cruise operators actively monitor conditions and make operational decisions day by day.

Typical responses can include:

·       Adjusting embarkation or disembarkation points

·       Guests may be asked to join or leave the ship from a different town or city than originally scheduled, with transfers provided where needed

·       Using coach transfers for certain sections

·       If one part of the river is not navigable, guests might travel that stretch by road and rejoin a ship further along the route

·       Swapping ships - in some cases, guests remain in the same cabin category but are moved from one vessel to another positioned on the other side of a low water stretch, helping to preserve as much of the itinerary as possible.
